India: Women hold get-together on New Year in Jajmau

Kanpur: Despite cold but sunny weather the women did not fail to enjoy the arrival of the new year here on Saturday.

Being a limited gathering, they assembled at the terrace of their Block's five-storey high building in Jajmau area. 

What remained special about this special simple event was that nearly all of them brought one or two items.

Kanpur: Taking a round of the weekly vegetable market in KDA Colony locality of Jajmau area here, it is fitting to write that the lemon is quite a costly item than other various green vegetables.

If green pea is selling at the rate of Rs 25 per kg at this considerably big wider space, the lemon is three pieces in ten rupees. While it is one for Rs five just outside the market ground.

What the sellers point out at a hefty cost is that, this item is not coming in mandis amply. That's why the rate is not going down, they add with an indication of a grin. 

India: BJP to meet to discuss strategy for UP panchayat polls

Lucknow, Jan 1 (PTI) The BJP will chalk out its strategy for the coming panchayat elections in Uttar Pradesh during a meeting on Sunday which will be attended by national vice president and in-charge of the state affairs in the party, Radha Mohan Singh.

Various important issues will be taken up in the meeting including the coming panchayat elections, vice president of the state unit and member of Legislative Council Vijay Bahadur Pathak said on Friday.

India: Life goes fast despite colder weather in Jajmau

Kanpur: The lowest temperature remains at 5 degrees Celsius on the last day of the leap year here on Thursday.

The glowing sun provides a feeling of warmth. The residents in Jajmau has been facing cold weather for the past days.

Children are beating the weather woes by engaging themselves in either playing cricket or other games.

However, life goes on despite the tough weather. In factories, the work continues as usual. The road in this area remains crowded with vehicles. The highways are also finding packed with heavy vehicles.

India: Muslim youth arrested for having interfaith relationship with a girl

Noida, Dec 29 (PTI) A youth who was in an interfaith relationship with a girl has been arrested in Greater Noida under the Uttar Pradesh's new anti-conversion law, police said on Tuesday, the second such case to be lodged in Gautam Buddh Nagar district.

The man, around 20, had got into a relationship with the girl, but allegedly did not reveal his real name and religion to her, according to Greater Noida Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Vishal Pandey.

India: At year's end boy thanks dad for new badminton

Kanpur: As the year slowly but steadily passes to its end in a few more hours, the memories are what we are going to recall in the coming year.

I have experienced a very memorable story from a 12-year-old boy who told he wanted to express heartily his joys. He narrated how his father readily agreed his request to buy badminton 🏸  as his old piece got broken while playing with his friends.

What he could not expect got fulfilled in a very short time. Happiness was spreading on his face to find a new racquet which was quite costly in comparison to the old one.

India: 15-year-old girl kidnapped, raped in UP

Ballia (UP), Dec 29 (PTI) A 15-year-old girl belonging to a village here was allegedly kidnapped and raped, police said on Tuesday.

According to a complaint given by the girl's father, his neighbour Suraj Paswan (22) kidnapped his daughter on October 9 and took her to Noida where he raped her, Ubhaon police station SHO Yogendra Bahadur Singh said.

On the complaint, an FIR was lodged, after which the girl was recovered and the accused arrested.

The girl has been sent to the district hospital for a medical examination, the SHO added.

India: Over 60 Congress workers taken into custody in Lucknow

Hamirpur (UP), Dec 29 (PTI) Over 60 Congress leaders and workers were taken into custody on Tuesday during their "Gai Bachao, Kisan Bachao Yatra" here, police said.

Around 60 to 70 Congress leaders and workers were taken into custody at Shahid Park here while staging a protest without permission, Circle Officer (Sadar) Anurag Singh said.

India: Interfaith marriage: HC quashes FIR, says adult woman has right to live as she wishes

Allahabad, Dec 28 (PTI) The Allahabad High Court has quashed an FIR lodged against a Muslim man over a marriage with a Hindu woman, ruling that she had a right to live her life on her own terms.

Upholding the interfaith marriage in a case from Uttar Pradesh's Etah district, a bench of Justice Pankaj Naqvi and Vivek Agarwal said the woman is an adult according to her high school certificate.

India: Kanpur reels under colder weather at year-end

Kanpur: The cold weather keeps up its firm hold in the city and adjoining suburban area known as Jajmau.

As the sun draws to complete its cycle in the evening the temperature sends the shivering chilliness in the open areas.

Even the high-rise flats also becomes colder in the night. One said that his second storey flat in quite a spacious area turns into cold storage. There is no respite during the night hours. What remains worth satisfactory is a glow of the sun in the day.
