India: Farmer hangs self in UP over financial woes

Banda (UP), Jan 6 (PTI) A 45-year-old farmer committed suicide in Uttar Pradesh's Banda district following financial hardships, police said on Wednesday.

Kallu, a resident of Godhani village in Tindwari block, owed Rs 38,000 to a bank and he was worried in the absence of any work, an officer quoted the farmer's wife as saying.

He hanged himself to death on Tuesday, Tindwari police station incharge Zakir Hussain said.

An official of the Pailani subdivision said the farmer had eight bighas of land and the matter was being probed.

Lucknow Jan 5 (PTI) Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel on Tuesday asked mothers to try to ensure that their children do not become fixated with mobile phones.

Mathura, Jan 4 (PTI) The judicial custody of four alleged Popular Front of India (PFI) activists, booked for sedition and other charges after their arrest while going to the Hathras rape-murder victim's village in October last year, has been extended for 90 days, a senior government counsel said on Monday.

Deputy SP of Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force, Gautam Buddha Nagar, Rakesh Paliwal on Monday sought extension of the judicial custody of Atiq-ur Rehman, Masood, Alam and journalist Siddiq Kappan, he said.

India: Four Hindutva goons wave saffron flag at Taj Mahal complex; held

Agra, Jan 4 (PTI) Four people were arrested here on Monday after they waved saffron flags at the Taj Mahal complex, police said.

The CISF personnel deployed at the historic place apprehended them after which they were handed over to police.

Tajganj police station Inspector Umesh Chandra Tripathi said three people waved flags at the Taj Mahal complex under the leadership of right-wing leader Gaurav Thakur.

Police have registered a case against them, he said.

India: 5-year-old girl raped in UP

Shahjahanpur (UP), Jan 5 (PTI) A youth has been arrested for allegedly raping a five-year-old girl in Uttar Pradesh's Shahjahanpur district, police said on Tuesday.

The incident occurred at a village under Jalalabad police station area on Monday evening when the girl was playing outside her house, Superintendent of Police (Rural) Nipun Agarwal said.

India: Man gets 14-year jail term for raping minor in UP

Noida (UP), Jan 3 (PTI) A court here has sentenced a man to 14 years' rigorous imprisonment for raping a minor in 2016, the Gautam Buddh Nagar police said on Sunday.

The order was issued on Saturday by a special judge for cases lodged under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, the police said.

India: Farmer protesting against agri laws kills self

Ghaziabad, Jan 2 (PTI) A 75-year-old farmer protesting against the Centre's new agri laws allegedly hanged himself at the Uttar Pradesh-Delhi border in Ghazipur on Saturday morning.

Sardar Kashmir Singh, a native of Bilaspur in Uttar Pradesh's Rampur district, hanged himself in a mobile toilet using a rope, police said.

Deputy Superintendent of Police of Indirapuram Anshu Jain told PTI that a suicide note written in Gurumukhi was found on him.

The BJP does research in lies and spreads hatred among people, Akhilesh Yadav said addressing party workers who had come to extend greetings on the New Year at the party headquarters here.

The party workers will have to apprise people of the reality and tell them about achievements of the Samajwadi Party government, Yadav said.
