India: Second round of screening for Zika virus begins

Kanpur: Surge in the Zika virus stricken patients has sent the district administration into a dizzying action.

So far the tally has gone to as many as 36, a double-digit figure. The second phase of screening has begun today.

The virus is known to have spread in a 3-km radius around Chakeri Cantonment, with District Magistrate Visakh G Iyer is reported to have been visiting the home of affected.

The 25 people infected, including Air Force personnel have been isolated.

India: Fast speeding truck crushes four to death on highway

Kanpur: Four persons were killed after a fast speeding truck crushed them on the Lucknow-Kanpur Highway.

The victims had stopped their car to purchase guavas when the truck hit their vehicle from behind.

The incident took place under the Ganga ghat police circle in the nearby Unnao district on Wednesday night.

The impact of the accident was so great that the car reversed due to the collision and cartwheeled for about 50 metres.

Leaving the truck the driver fled from the spot following the accident.

India: 25 fresh cases of Zika reported again in Kanpur

Kanpur: As many as  25 fresh cases of Zika virus have been verified now. There were 11 cases of Zika virus untill yesterday.

"Health teams have been rushed to various places, and contact tracing is underway. We advise people not to panic," said Chief Medical Officer Nepal Singh here.

The health department is testing and taking samples of 400 to 500 people for the Zika virus while door-to-door sampling is also underway.

The new cases have been found in Jajmau's Tiwaripur, Ashrafabad, Pokharpur, Shyam Nagar, and Adarsh Nagar areas.

India: Diwali permits genuine green firecrackers in Kanpur

Kanpur: The shops selling firecrackers in the city areas Kanpur are fewer compared to previous years.

A shopkeeper selling firecrackers on the festive occasion said that restrictions were quite confusing as it becomes hard to distinguish between a genuine green cracker and a sham one.

The demand and supply have gone down. The spectre of lockdown also looms large on the business. Some traditional sellers have opted out to other kinds of business.

India: Expelled SP MLA joins BJP in UP

Lucknow, Nov 2 (PTI) Samajwadi Party MLA Subhash Pasi, who was expelled from the party on Tuesday, joined the BJP here.

"SP MLA Subhash Pasi, his wife Rina Pasi today joined BJP here in presence of party state president Swatantra Dev Singh," BJP state general secretary Govind Narain Shukla said.

Singh welcomed Pasi in the party, and said his joining will further strengthen the BJP.

Earlier in the day, Pasi, the MLA from Sadipur seat of Ghazipur, was expelled from the SP for alleged anti-party activities.

India: Three get life sentence in dowry death case in UP

Ballia (UP), Nov 3 (PTI) A court here has sentenced three people to life imprisonment in a four-year-old dowry death case.

Additional Sessions Judge Hussain Ahmad Ansari awarded life sentence to Purvanchal Chauhan, his father Keshav Chauhan and mother Rukmani Chauhan.

The court also imposed Rs 11,000 fine on each of them.

India: CBI takes over Manish Gupta's death probe case

Kanpur: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday took over the probe from the Uttar Pradesh Police. Thus SIT probe now goes into the hands of CBI.

This step was initiated in connection with the death case of businessman Manish Gupta, who allegedly died during a police raid at a hotel in Gorakhpur.

Manish Gupta, a 36-year-old property dealer, had died after being allegedly assaulted by the police in a Gorakhpur hotel which they had raided earlier in September.

India: Father of a rape survivor dies in mysterious conditions

Kanpur: Father of a rape survivor died under mysterious circumstances in Kanpur.

The relatives took the body to his native village for the last rites on Tuesday.

But as soon as police came to know about it, they reached the village and took the body in their custody and sent it for a post-mortem.

According to the police, the last rites will take place only after the post-mortem examination.

The rape survivor had accused a retired inspector Dinesh Tripathi, a resident of Prayagraj, of rape.

India: UP govt to light 12 lakh lamps in Ayodhya

Ayodhya, Nov 1 (PTI) The Uttar Pradesh government will light 12 lakh earthen lamps, nine lakh of which will be lit on the banks of the Saryu, bettering the previous Diwali record.

Last year, over six lakh earthen lamps were lit during the "Deepotsav" to celebrate the festival, creating a world record.

According to government statement, the staging of Ram Lilas, a 3D holographic display, laser show and fireworks will be part of the five-day-long celebrations, beginning Monday.

Zika virus case in Kanpur goes up to eleven presently

Kanpur: The mosquito buzzez in the day. The place does not remain safe.

Thank God the Zika virus has not touched more than eleven patients here.

With appearance of one more fresh case,  the total cases now reach up to 11.

With one more Zika virus case recorded in Kanpur , the total infection tally in the city has reached to 11, as reported.

Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Kanpur, Dr Nepal Singh, said that pathology samples of a 42-year-old woman was collected from Shiv Katra, in  Lal Bangla area.
