India: Shopkeeper shot dead in UP's Muzaffarnagar

Muzaffarnagar (UP), Oct 19 (PTI) A 38-year-old shopkeeper was shot dead allegedly over a monetary dispute in a village here on Tuesday, police said.

Pravinder Kumar was at the shop in Phaguna village when the accused, identified only as Bhura, killed him, they said.

Villagers staged a protest following the murder, and police have launched a manhunt to nab Bhura, officials said.

In a separate incident, an unidentified dead body was found in the Luhari Khurd area under the Charthawal police station limits of the district on Tuesday, they said.

India: 'The Wire' finds flaws in IIT-K report on handling of Covid-19

Kanpur: The IIT Kanpur report on handling of the Covid -19, as The Wire reports, is deeply flawed in many ways, and it would be easy to dismiss it as mere political propaganda.

However, it deserves careful scrutiny given the wide media coverage and the eminence of its author.

Its most striking weakness is that it fails to ask, in any meaningful way, how many people died in Uttar Pradesh as a result of the COVID-19 epidemic, writes Wire.

India: Eight people boked in UP for burning effigies of PM, CM

Budaun (UP), Oct 19 (PTI) An FIR was lodged on Tuesday against seven people for burning effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, police said.

The action was taken after some videos went viral on social media in which some persons were seen burning effigies of the PM and the CM, they said.

Taking note of the videos, the police have lodged an FIR against seven people have been lodged under section 188 of the Indian Penal Code for violating official orders.

The police are trying to trace the offenders.

India: Temple priest's son shot dead in UP's Muzaffarnagar

Muzaffarnagar (UP), Oct 20 (PTI) A 16-year-old son of a temple priest was shot dead by unidentified people on Shahabuddin Road locality here, police said on Wednesday.

The deceased was identified as Raj Mishra and his body was sent for post mortem, Kotwali Police Station SHO Anand Dev Mishra said.

In his complaint to the police, the priest Devendra Pershad Mishra said three people had taken his son on the pretext of eating out Tuesday. His body was found later in the night.

Three people have been taken into custody for interrogation, police said.

India: Drug to treat dengue has been developed, claims CDRI

Kanpur: Central Drug Research Institute (CSIR-CDRI) scientists have claimed to have developed a medicine to treat dengue.

Produced from plants, the medicine, called AQCH, is anti-viral in nature. It was tested successfully in labs and on mice.

City's Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Memorial (GSVM) Medical College, and the medical Colleges in Lucknow and Agra will conduct the trial of this drug.

A total of 100 patients at each centre will receive treatment with this new drug.

India: IIT-K to launch its second heritage olympiad on Nov 14

Kanpur: The Start-up Innovation and Incubation Centre (SIIC), an IIT-Kanpur incubatee, will launch its second edition of the Heritage Olympiad, Cultre, on November 14.

The second edition of this Olympiad will focus on imparting a preliminary understanding of the Indian heritage and how traditions are created and passed on to the generations ahead.

"SIIC has had a history of creating, supporting, and promoting technology and knowledge intensive innovations that uphold the Indian heritage," said Abhay Karandikar, director, IIT-K.

India: Decomposed bodies found in UP's Kanpur village paddy field

Kanpur: Decomposed bodies of a missing 22-year-old youth and his 16-year-old alleged girlfriend, have been found in a paddy field in the outskirts of the village in Kanpur district. Both of them belonged to the Unnao district.

The bodies of the victims, identified as Balkishan and the alleged girlfriend, were at least four to five days old, according to the police.

The identity of the victims will be further ascertained through DNA profiling.

The police said that it appears that the bodies of the couple were burnt by pouring acid.

India: Cases of perforated intestine reported in Kanpur

Kanpur: At least two cases from UP's Kanpur have demonstrated cases of perforated intestine.

A 7-year-old Priya from Kanpur was suffering from extensive diarrhoea. Parents approached the private hospital here.

The child was given Lomotil to stop diarrhoea.

Thereafter the child suffered acute constipation and acute loss of appetite.

Parents again went to the same hospital where the paediatrician after doing an Ultrasound informed them that their child was suffering from a hole in the intestine.

India: Dalit woman raped by 30-year-old in UP's Bhadohi

Bhadohi (UP), Oct 18 (PTI) A 20-year-old Dalit woman was allegedly abducted and raped by a man of another village, police said, adding the accused was arrested on Monday.

The 30-year-old accused lured the woman, took her away and raped her several times, according to an FIR lodged at Gyanpur police station.

The FIR was lodged on the basis of the complaint made by victim's father on August 17 and raids were carried out to rescue her but to no avail, SSI Prabhunath Karwar said.

India: Lawyer shot dead in UP's Shahjahanpur district court

Shahjahanpur (UP), Oct 18 (PTI) A lawyer died of a gunshot wound to the head at the Shahjahanpur district court here on Monday afternoon and police are trying to ascertain if it is a case of suicide or murder.

Superintendent of Police (SP) S Anand said advocate Bhupendra Singh (38) of Jalalabad tehsil had gone to the third-floor office of ACJM-I of the district court to meet a clerk in connection with some case when a gunshot was heard and he was found dead.
