India: Mayawati wants SC-supervised probe into Delhi violence

New Delhi, Feb 27 (PTI) BSP chief Mayawati on Thursday demanded a Supreme Court-supervised probe into the communal violence in parts of northeast Delhi and said that the Centre and the AAP government should pitch in together to compensate people for the loss suffered in the riots.

The former Uttar Pradesh chief minister said police should be given a free hand to control the law and order situation in the national capital.

India: Teacher arrested on molestation charges

Thane, Feb 27 (PTI) A teacher has been arrested by Navi Mumbai police for allegedly molesting over a dozen girl students on various occasions.

Lochan Parulekar, a computer teacher, was arrested on Wednesday under IPC section 354 (molestation), said an official of Turbhe police station.

As many as 14 girls had complained to the school authorities that Parulekar called them for extra classes on holidays and molested them.

India: Paswan seeks impartial probe into Delhi violence

New Delhi, Feb 27 (PTI) BJP ally and Union minister Ram Vilas Paswan on Thursday demanded an "impartial probe" into the Delhi violence, which claimed at least 34 lives, and said stringent action should be taken against the guilty irrespective of their caste and religion.

The Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) leader said the visit of National Security Advisor Ajit Doval to riot-hit areas to interact with locals and review the security measures underlines the Union government's seriousness in the matter.

India: Sweeper held for molesting minor at wedding

Mumbai, Feb 27 (PTI) A 25-year-old sweeper was arrested for allegedly molesting a 10-year-old girl at a wedding in Maharashtra's Yavatmal city, police said on Thursday.

The Lohara police arrested Akshay Chandekar after he was allegedly caught molesting the minor in a lawn of a hotel on Darwa road where the wedding was taking place on Wednesday night, an official said.

India: Minor girl raped in Andhra Pradesh

Machilipatnanm (AP), Feb 27 (PTI) A 10-year old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted by an unidentified man and dumped in a serious condition in Nuzvid town in Krishna District in Andhra Pradesh, police said on Thursday.

The girl was found by a police patrol team in a semi- conscious state near the IIIT campus in Nuzvid early Thursday and shifted to a hospital in Vijayawada after being treated locally, they said.

Swedish parliamentary delegation takes up CAA issue with Bengal ministers, oppn leaders

Kolkata, Feb 27 (PTI) A Swedish parliamentary delegation, on a visit to the country, took up the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) issue during an interaction with West Bengal ministers and opposition leaders at the Assembly here on Thursday, Speaker Biman Banerjee said.

The 10-member delegation asked about West Bengal's views on the CAA, Banerjee said.

Israel arrests PA officials in occupied Jerusalem

27 Feb 2020; MEMO: Israeli police yesterday arrested two senior Palestinian Authority (PA) officials in occupied Jerusalem after raiding their homes and searching them, Quds Press reported.

Local sources told Quds Press that the Israeli occupation police arrested the Director of Arab Studies Society Khalil Tafakji from the Juz neighbourhood in Jerusalem.

PLO calls on EU to act ‘urgently’ to prevent Israel annexation of West Bank

27 Feb 2020; MEMO: PLO has called for the EU to urgently interfere in order to stop Israeli settlement expansion and the annexation of the occupied West Bank, Palestinian media reported yesterday.

In a letter to the EU Envoy to Palestine, the PLO called for the European body to put pressure on Israel to stop its settlement plan in the E1 area.

Russia: ‘Deal of the century’ won’t achieve peace

27 Feb 2020; MEMO: The Russian Foreign Ministry ruled out the possibility of achieving a permanent settlement in the Middle East as a result of the US drafted Middle East “peace plan” to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict dubbed the “deal of the century”.

Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said: “The instability between Israel and Palestine is one of the main factors for instability in the region.”
