India: MP CM to lead anti-CAA rally in Bhopal on Wednesday

Bhopal, Dec 24 (PTI) Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath will lead a protest march against the Citizenship Amendment Act in state capital Bhopal on Wednesday, Congress leaders said.

Called 'Samvidhan Bachao Nyaya Shanti Yatra', it will start at noon from Rangmahal Talkies and culminate at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at Minto Hall (old Vidhan Sabha), MP Congress vice president and organisation in charge Chandra Prabhash Shekhar said.

India: Protests against CAA continues in Telangana

Hyderabad, Dec 24 (PTI) Protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) continued at some places in Telangana on Tuesday with different groups holding rallies.

A huge rally was taken out at Nirmal town against the CAA and NRC by different organisations, political parties and students organisations, a senior police official told PTI.

The protestors raised slogans and held aloft placards, demanding immediate withdrawal of the CAA.

India: Cop, two others booked for raping a woman in UP

Bareilly (UP), Dec 25 (PTI) A case has been registered against a policeman and two others for allegedly raping a woman in Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly district, officials said on Wednesday.

The FIR was registered on Tuesday night on a court's direction.

Based on the complaint of a 21-year-old woman, Chief Judicial Magistrate Piyush Siddharth had on Monday directed registration of an FIR against Katai Mill police outpost in-charge Arun Kumar and two others for allegedly raping her.

India: First detention centre in Karnataka to house illegal immigrants

Bengaluru, Dec 25 (PTI) Amid nation-wide protests over the controversial citizenship law, the first detention centre in Karnataka, reportedly meant to lodge illegal immigrants and migrants overstaying in the country, has been opened in Sondekoppa village near here.

The facility with several rooms, a kitchen and toilets has been kept ready on the directions of the government, a social welfare department official said.

However, Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai objected to the term 'Detention Centre'.

India: Muted Christmas celebrations in Assam amid fear over CAA

Guwahati, Dec 25 (PTI) Christmas celebrations were a low-key affair in Assam amid ongoing protests against the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act.

Despite the somber mood, midnight prayers for peace and happiness were organised across the state on Tuesday night.

Priests in various churches said that the situation and mood in the state did not enliven the spirit to celebrate the occasion with mirth and gaiety.

Gaya (Bihar), Dec 25 (PTI) The Dalai Lama on Wednesday vowed that Tibetan Buddhists will continue to fight with "the power of truth" the communist regime in China which, according to him, thrived on the "power of the gun".

The Tibetan spiritual leader made the statement at the Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya near here, the place where Buddha is believed to have attained enlightenment more than two millennia ago.

India: Five held for attempting to block Karna CM's car

Kannur (Ker), Dec 25 (PTI) Five activists belonging to the ruling CPI(M) and Opposition Congress' youth wings, have been arrested in connection with the incidents relating to waving of black flags and attempting to block Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa's car at nearby Pazhayangadi.

While three belong to the CPI(M)'s Students Federation of India (SFI), two are from the Youth Congress, police said on Wednesday.

The five have been arrested and remanded to 14 days judicial custody, they said.

17 Killed In Saudi-Led Artillery Attack On Northern Yemeni Border Market

SANAA, Dec 25 (NNN-SABA) – At least 17 people were killed on Tuesday, in a Saudi-led coalition artillery attack on a popular border market in Yemen’s northern province of Saada, medics and local residents said.

“Twelve Ethiopian migrants were among those killed in the cross-border shelling at Al-Raqu market,” two medics and a local resident at the scene said.

The attack also injured over 15 others, the sources said.

There was no immediate comment from the Saudi Arabia-led military coalition, which has been engaging in the Yemeni conflict since 2015.

Turkey Seeks To Reach New Cease-Fire With Russia Over Syria’s Idlib

ANKARA, Dec 25 (NNN-ANADOLU) – Turkey is discussing with Russia, reaching a new truce in Syria’s northwestern province of Idlib, Turkish Presidential Spokesman, Ibrahim Kalin, said.

The negotiation aims to put an end to the increased violence in the region, Kalin said, during a televised news conference. “These attacks must come to an end immediately, under a new cease-fire,” he said.

“We are now waiting for Russia to begin efforts in the coming 24 hours, for an end to the attacks in Idlib,” he added.
