India: RJD Bihar Bandh : Republic TV journalist roughed up

Patna, Dec 21 (PTI) A journalist of a leading news channel here was on Saturday roughed up by persons trying to enforce the day-long bandh called by the RJD-led opposition Grand Alliance in Bihar in protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act and the proposed National Register for Citizens.

Prakash Singh, who works with Republic TV, shared video clips of the incident with media persons wherein he, along with cameraman Suraj can be seen being manhandled by bandh supporters at the Dak Bungalow crossing in the city.

India: Haasan now slams proposed NRC, vows to fight till "this tyranny goes off"

Chennai, Dec 21 (PTI) Actor-politician Kamal Haasan, who has come out against the citizenship law, on Saturday slammed the proposed NRC, saying said one's ancestry cannot be denied based on documentary evidence or lack of it and vowed to fight till "this tyranny goes off".

Days after calling the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) 'autocratic' and 'draconian', the Makkal Needhi Maiam chief said it was high time the NDA government realised that majority in Parliament doesn't give it authority to "destroy the fabric of my nation".

India: Lawyers protest outside Jamia varsity against CAA

New Delhi, Dec 21 (PTI) Over 100 lawyers gathered outside the Jamia Milia Islamia on Saturday to lodge their protest against the amended citizenship act and the National Register of Citizens for India (NRC).

The lawyers gathered outside the varsity with posters that said 'We advocates condemn brutal attack on students', 'Stop dividing India, boycott CAA & NRC', 'NRC narak (hell)', 'Uphold the Constitution'.

The advocates gathered near Gate no 7 of the varsity where the main protests were held by the students.

India: Police names deceased protestors as accused in FIR

Mangaluru, Dec 22 (PTI) Mangaluru city police have named two people killed in police firing in the city on Thursday as accused in the First Information Report (FIR) on the violent protests against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

Jaleel, 49, and Nausheen, 23, were killed due to bullet injuries when police opened fire at an anti-CAA protest march in Bunder area in the heart of the city on December 19.

Inda: Prohibitory order imposed for two months on Imphal West

Imphal, Dec 22 (PTI) The Manipur government has imposed a prohibitory order on Imphal West district for two months in view of the continued protests against the new citizenship law, an official said on Sunday.

The prohibitory order under Section 144 CrPC was clamped on Imphal West on Saturday from 5.30 pm, said a statement issued by the office of District Magistrate Naorem Praveen.

India: Woman set ablaze by boyfriend's family

Raipur, Dec 22 (PTI) A 20-year-old woman was set on fire allegedly by her boyfriend's family members in Raipur district, a police official said on Sunday.

The woman, identified as Saraswati Sonwani, suffered 80 per cent burns and is currently battling for life at a hospital here, he said.

The incident took place in Kholha village on December 18 but came to light on Saturday when the hospital authorities in Raipur city informed the police about the admission of the woman with serious burn injuries.

23 dead as protests grow against India citizenship law

NEW DELHI (AP) — Violent protests against India’s citizenship law that excludes Muslim immigrants swept the country over the weekend despite the government’s ban on public assembly and suspension of internet services in many parts, raising the nationwide death toll to 23, police said.

Nine people died in clashes with police in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday, said state police spokesman Pravin Kumar. He said most of the victims were young people but denied police were responsible.

India: Anti-CAA stir: Death toll mounts to 15 in UP

Lucknow, Dec 21 (PTI) Fresh cases of stone pelting took place in Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur and Rampur on Saturday against the Citizenship Amendment Act, while 15 people, including an eight-year-old boy, were killed since Thursday in violent agitations in different parts of the state.

Over 260 policemen were also injured, of whom 57 received gunshot wounds, IG (Law and Order) Praveen Kumar told PTI on Saturday.

Rampur (UP), Dec 21 (PTI) Clashes broke out between anti-CAA protesters and police in Uttar Pradesh's Rampur on Saturday, resulting in injuries to several people, including policemen, officials said

Around 400 to 500 people gathered here to protest against the amended Citizenship Act amid a bandh call and five of them were taken into preventive custody, they said.
