Mentally disabled man shot dead by Army sentry in J-K

Srinagar, Nov 3 (PTI) A mentally disabled man was allegedly shot dead by an Army sentry in the early hours of Saturday when he ignored his warnings and walked towards an Army camp in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said.

A security guard at the Army camp shot at Rayees Ahmad Wani at 3 am, they said.

Police said they have taken cognisance of the killing and a probe into the matter is underway.

Army and defence officials said they were ascertaining the circumstances which led to Wani's death.

India: Let there be referendum on Ram temple issue: Ambedkar

Mumbai, Nov 3 (PTI) Bharipa Bahujan Mahasangh chief Prakash Ambedkar on Saturday demanded a referendum on the issue of construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya.

Talking to reporters here, Ambedkar said issuance of ordinance and acquisition of disputed land for the temple construction were not feasible options.

"Conduct a referendum on construction of Ram temple," he said.

New Delhi, Oct 31 (PTI) The following is the chronology of events relating to 1987 Hashimpura Massacre case leading up to the Delhi High Court on Wednesday sentencing 16 ex-policemen to life imprisonment for killing 42 people of a minority community in Uttar Pradesh.

- May 22, 1987: 50 Muslims picked up allegedly by Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) personnel from Hashimpura village in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh.

- Victims later shot and bodies thrown into canal. 42 persons declared dead.

BJP `champion' in taking away tribal lands: Congress

Raipur/Bilaspur, Oct 31 (PTI) Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said Wednesday that the Raman Singh-led BJP government in Chhattisgarh has become a "champion" in snatching natural resources away from tribals and handing them over it to businessmen.

It diluted laws for this purpose, he alleged.

"The people of Bastar have been bearing the brunt of this brutal Raman Singh government for 15 years. This government has done nothing except looting jal-jungle-zameen (water, forest and land) of tribals and handing them over to a few businessmen.

Australia aims to remove asylum seeker children from Nauru

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — Australia aims to remove all asylum seeker children from Nauru within two months as concerns escalate about their deteriorating health after languishing on the tiny Pacific atoll nation for up to five years.

But Cabinet ministers said Thursday the government is maintaining its much-criticized policy of sending all asylum seekers who attempt to reach Australia by boat to immigration camps on Nauru and Papua New Guinea. Refugee advocates welcomed the change for children, 46 of whom were born in Nauru.

31 years ago; 42 Muslims were rounded up by Uttar Pradesh PAC and taken to Ganga canal. They were lined up and shot. Their dead bodies were thrown in the canal.

Incident took place just after Meeruth riots in 1987. 42 victims were picked up from their homes and ordered to march with their hands up. Police vehicle took them to the canal where they were shot in cold blood.

Three Palestinians killed in Israeli air strike

Gaza City (Palestinian Territories), Oct  29; GANASHAKTI: Three Palestinians were killed Sunday in an Israeli air strike on the Gaza Strip, the health ministry in the enclave said.

Ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra said emergency crews were transporting the bodies of the dead, who appeared to be in their early teens, to hospital in Gaza.

The Israeli military said that one of its aircrafts had fired on a group of Palestinians near the Gaza border.
