India: GST collection at Rs 1.13 lakh cr in April, highest ever

New Delhi, May 1 (PTI) GST revenue mop-up scaled a monthly record high of over Rs 1.13 lakh crore in April, an increase of 10 per cent over the collection in the year-ago period, on the back of anti-evasion steps taken by tax officers.

Total number of summary sales return GSTR-3B filed for the month of March up to April 30 stood at 72.13 lakh.

April 2019 is the second consecutive month when Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection exceeded Rs 1 lakh crore. In March, the mop-up was Rs 1.06 lakh crore.

Indian Polls: CPI(M) extends support to AAP in Delhi

Indian Polls: EC notice to Sidhu for remarks against PM

New Delhi, May 1 (PTI) The Election Commission has issued a show cause notice to Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu for his remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Citing a complaint by a BJP worker in Gujarat, the EC notice reproduced excerpts of his speech in which the Congress star campaigner had described the prime minister as a 'thief' while addressing an election meeting on April 17 in Ahmedabad.

Cyclone Fani in India: 81 trains cancelled, 2 diverted

New Delhi, May 1 (PTI) Railways has cancelled 81 trains and diverted two more in view of cyclone "Fani", which is likely to affect 19 districts of Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal, besides Kolkata.

The railways said that it will grant full refund to passengers for the cancelled or diverted trains if the tickets are produced for cancellation within three days from scheduled date of journey.

Indian Polls: EC clean chit to PM on Latur speech

New Delhi, May 1 (PTI) The Election Commission Wednesday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi's speech in Latur last month in which he had urged first time voters to dedicate their vote in the name of the Balakot air strike heroes and the soldiers killed in the Pulwama attack is not violative of its instructions on invoking armed forces in poll campaigns.

India: Lokpal office to move out of Delhi's five star hotel

New Delhi, May 2 (PTI) The office of country's first Lokpal, the anti-corruption ombudsman, will move out of a five-star luxury hotel in Delhi to its own permanent address.

At present, the office of Lokpal works from 'The Ashok' hotel in Chanakyapuri here.

"The government is in the process of searching a permanent office for Lokpal," the personnel ministry replied to an RTI application filed by this PTI journalist.

India: SC directs Centre to file response to petitions seeking Rafale review

New Delhi, Apr 30 (PTI) The Supreme Court directed the Centre on Tuesday to file response by May 4 to the petitions seeking review of last December's verdict by which the apex court had dismissed the pleas challenging India's deal to procure 36 Rafale fighter jets from France.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi did not allow the plea of the Centre that it be granted four weeks time to file its response to the pleas.

India: Woman doctor's body found with slit throat

New Delhi, May 1 (PTI) The body of a 25-year-old doctor with her throat slit was found in her flat in central Delhi's Ranjeet Nagar area, police said Wednesday.

The deceased has been identified as Garima Mishra, a native of Uttar Pradesh, they said.

Police were informed at 12 AM after which they went to the spot and found the body of the doctor lying in the two-room apartment.

Indian Polls: Yechury lashes out at EC over clean chit to PM Modi

New Delhi, May 1 (PTI) Lashing out at the Election Commission over the clean chit given to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on complaints of Model Code of Conduct violations, CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury Wednesday said the poll body's dealing with such cases was "emboldening perpetrators."

In a letter to the poll body, he said, "Across the country, there is a growing concern about the manner in which the Election Commission of India is dealing with complaints regarding gross violation of the Model Code of Conduct by Narendra Modi".
