India: EVM controversy in MP: Khuria Returning Officer removed

New Delhi, Dec 5 (PTI) The Election Commission Wednesday ordered the removal of returning officer of Khurai assembly seat in Madhya Pradesh after some electronic voting machines and paper trail machines reached the strong room 48 hours after the elections were held.

These machines were meant as reserves and were not used in polling.

Assistant returning officer of Khurai Rajesh Mehra has already been placed under suspension.

India: Minor girl sexually assaulted by relative

New Delhi, Dec 5 (PTI) A six-year-old girl was reportedly sexually assaulted by a relative at her house in outer Delhi's Karan Vihar, police said Wednesday.

The incident took place on Tuesday, they said.

The victim was sexually assaulted when her parents were out for work. When her parents returned home, the minor girl narrated the incident to her mother following which they approached the police, a senior police officer said.

India 4th highest emitter of CO2

New Delhi, Dec 5 (PTI) India is the fourth highest emitter of carbon dioxide in the world, accounting for 7 per cent of global emissions in 2017, a study said Wednesday.

The top four emitters in 2017, which covered 58 per cent of global emissions, were China (27 per cent), the US (15 per cent), the European Union (10 per cent) and India (7 per cent), according to the projection by the Global Carbon Project.

The rest of the world contributed 41 per cent last year, it said.

Christian Michel being extradited to India

New Delhi, Dec 4 (PTI) Christian Michel, the alleged middleman in the Rs 3,600-crore AgustaWestland chopper deal, is being extradited to India from the UAE, official sources said Tuesday night.

They said he was scheduled to be brought back tonight from Dubai.

Michel, a British national, is wanted in India in connection with the AgustaWestland VVIP choppers scam.

SpiceJet plane makes emergency landing at Delhi airport

New Delhi, Dec 4 (PTI) A Jodhpur-bound SpiceJet plane, carrying 60 passengers, made an emergency landing at the airport here Tuesday, reportedly after smoke was detected in the baggage compartment, a source said.

The airline was operating a Q-400 aircraft.

According to the source, Air Traffic Controller announced full emergency for the flight SG-2695 at around 1500 hours.

The source said that reportedly smoke was detected in the baggage compartment and that there were around 60 passengers on board.

India: Air pollution: NGT slaps 25 crore fine on Delhi govt

New Delhi, Dec 3 (PTI) The National Green Tribunal Monday asked the Delhi government to deposit Rs 25 crore with the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) for their failure to curb the problem of pollution in the city.

A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel also asked the AAP government to furnish a performance guarantee of Rs 25 crore with the apex pollution monitoring body to ensure that there is no further lapse in this regard.

India: Court discharges Kejriwal, 6 others in rioting case

New Delhi, Dec 3 (PTI) A Delhi court on Monday discharged Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and six others in a case of alleged rioting in front of the house of the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in 2012.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal passed the order.

According to the prosecution, on August 26, 2012, Kejriwal and others had held a demonstration against coal scam in front of Singh's house and in order to stop them, water cannons were used following which the volunteers became violent.

India: AAP claims names of 30 lakh voters deleted in Delhi

New Delhi, Dec 3 (PTI) Reiterating its allegation of mass deletion of names of voters in Delhi, the Aam Aadmi Party said on Monday it will soon start a "door-to-door" programme to urge people to ensure that their names, if deleted, are added to the voters' list.

AAP leader Atishi claimed the names of nearly 30 lakh voters were deleted and a majority of them belonged to traders, minorities and Purvanchali communities settled in the city. "AAP workers will contact people door to door to get their names added in the voters' list," she said.

India: Train 18 crosses 180 kmph speed limit during trial run

New Delhi, Dec 2 (PTI) India's first locomotive-less train, known as Train 18, breached the 180 kmph speed limit during a test run on Sunday, a senior railway official said here.

When this Rs 100-crore indigenously designed train is made operational, it will become the country's fastest train.
