India: CRPF officer killed in militant attack in J-K

Srinagar, Sept 24 (PTI) A CRPF officer was killed in an attack by militants in Budgam district of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday, police said.

Militants shot at and injured the Assistant Sub Inspector of the CRPF of 117 battalion at Kaisermulla in Budgam district, a police official said.

He said the militants also decamped with the service weapon, an AK assault rifle, of ASI N C Badoley.

Badoley succumbed to injuries at the Army's 92 base hospital at Badami Bagh here, the official said.

India: J-K govt issues 18.52 lakh domicile certificates

Jammu, Sep 22 (PTI) The Jammu and Kashmir government has issued over 18.52 lakh domicile certificates (DCs) against more than 21.99 lakh applications received so far, an official spokesman said here.

As per the consolidated figures from across 20 districts of the Union territory, 21,99,513 people have applied for domicile certificates, of which 20,87,815 were found complete in all respects, while the rest were rejected for want of prescribed documents.

India: J-K HC arbitration centres to be set up in Srinagar, Jammu

Srinagar, Sep 20 (PTI) The Jammu and Kashmir High Court will have arbitration centres in both regions of the union territory to provide an institutionalised framework for speedy and expeditious resolution of disputes through an alternate dispute resolution mechanism.

The court has accorded approval to setting up of high court annexed arbitration centres at Srinagar and Jammu, an official spokesman said here on late Saturday evening.

The centres will be called The Jammu and Kashmir International Arbitration Centre (JKIAC)

Kashmir: PDP leader and former min Naeem Akhtar released from detention

Srinagar, Sep 17 (PTI) PDP leader and former minister Naeem Akhtar on Thursday said he has been set free by Jammu and Kashmir authorities after 407 days in custody since the abrogation of Article 370 in August last year.

"After 407 days of detention am informed that I am free to move about. Thank you rulers for small mercies while you inflict larger tragedies on our land," the PDP leader said in a sarcastic tweet.

Kashmir: Man detained by police found dead

Srinagar, Sep 16 (PTI) A man detained by police in Sopore was found dead in a nearby area of Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said on Wednesday.

Irfan Ahmad Dar (24), was detained by police in Sopore town on Tuesday in connection with an anti-terrorism case, the officials said.

His body was found at Charamundji falling under the jurisdiction of nearby Bomai Police Station on Tuesday evening, the officials said.

They said the body was brought to PCR Hospital at Srinagar on Wednesday for postmortem.

Kashmir: Separatists attack Indian security forces in Pulwama

Srinagar, Sep 13 (PTI) Militants attacked a team of security forces in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday, but there are no reports of any loss of life, police said.

"Around 5:45pm, militants fired on a party of Army's Rashtriya Rifles at Parigam in south Kashmir's Pulwama," a police official said.

The security forces retaliated forcing the militants to flee, he said.

There are no reports of any loss of life or injury, he said.

India: J&K glaciers melting at 'significant' rate, study finds

Srinagar, Sep 8 (PTI) Glaciers in Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh are melting at a "significant" rate, according to a first-of-its-kind study which used satellite data to find that over 1,200 glaciers in the Himalayan region saw an annual reduction in mass of 35 centimetres (cm) on average between 2000 and 2012.

The study, published in the journal Scientific Reports, was carried over the Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh region, including areas across the Line of Control (LoC) and Line of Actual Control (LAC), and in all 12,243 glaciers were studied for thickness and mass changes.
