ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) — It’s the big question looming over one of this year’s bloodiest mass shootings: Who opened fire at a crowded house party in Rochester, New York, on the last weekend of summer, killing two teenagers and wounding 14 other people?

Nearly a month after gunshots rang out just after midnight on Sept. 19, there have been no arrests, no rewards offered and little word from authorities on where the investigation stands. If the police have suspects in mind, they haven’t said so publicly. Nor have they told people who lost loved ones or were wounded themselves.

WHO warns global tuberculosis progress at risk amid coronavirus pandemic

UNITED NATIONS, Oct 14 (APP): The World Health Organization (WHO), has called for urgent action and funding to sustain progress in the global fight against tuberculosis (TB), warning that global targets for prevention and treatment “will likely be missed”.

Although TB cases fell by 9 per cent and deaths by 14 per cent between 2015 and 2019, access to TB services remains a challenge, according to WHO, a UN agency based in Geneva.

U.S. COVID-19 cases surpass 7.8 mln: Johns Hopkins University

NEW YORK, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- COVID-19 cases in the United States totaled 7,802,281 with 214,045 deaths as of 7:24 p.m. local time (2324 GMT) on Monday, according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University.

California has so far reported a total of 857,563 cases, the highest among all states. Texas registered 820,921, followed by Florida with 736,024. The caseload of New York state exceeded 470,000.

UN chief says 2.99 bln USD needed in 2021 to fully implement entrusted mandates

UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Monday that 2.99 billion U.S. dollars is needed in 2021 to fully implement the mandates entrusted to the organization.

"To fully implement the mandates entrusted to us, we will require a total of 2.99 billion U.S. dollars, which represents a net reduction of 2.8 percent compared to 2020, despite additional initiatives and mandated activities," the UN chief told the UN General Assembly's (UNGA) Fifth Committee.

China joins global effort to ensure COVID vaccine access for all

UNITED NATIONS, Oct 10 (APP): China is among three additional countries to have signed on to a global initiative aimed at ensuring fair and equitable access to a coronavirus vaccine once developed, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), a UN specialized agency.

Together with South Korea and the tiny Pacific island of Nauru, China joined the COVAX Facility this week, bringing the total number of participating nations and economies to 171, WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced Friday during his regular media briefing in Geneva on the pandemic.

USA: Biden maintains lead over Trump in final weeks leading to presidential election: new poll

NEW YORK, Oct 10 (APP): US Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden is viewed more favourably than Republican President Donald Trump among Americans on most issues with less than a month to go until the general election, according to a new Pew Research Center poll.

Pew conducted the national randomized survey among nearly 12,000 U.S. adults, 10,543 of whom were registered voters.

Stolen assets of developing countries must be returned: Pakistan

UNITED NATIONS, Oct 09 (APP): Pakistan has called for creating a “robust” mechanism for the return of stolen assets of developing countries that illicitly flow to “haven” nations.

“These flows stifle economic growth in the developing countries and condemn their poor population to a life of inequality and indignity,” Aamir Khan, deputy permanent representative of Pakistan to the UN, told the General Assembly’s Second Committee, which deals with economic and financial matters.

UN Security Council returns to its own chamber for meeting

UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- The Security Council on Thursday returned to its own chamber for an in-person meeting, the first time in almost seven months after a lockdown from the coronavirus.

At the beginning of the meeting on Mali, Russian ambassador Vassily Nebenzia, who chaired the meeting as president of the Security Council for the month of October, thanked council members for agreeing to return to the venue.
