As impeachment looms, GOP revolts against Trump on Syria

NEW YORK (AP) — They may have his back on impeachment, but some of President Donald Trump’s most loyal allies are suddenly revolting against his decision to pull back U.S. troops from northern Syria.

On Monday, one chief Trump loyalist in Congress called the move “unnerving to the core.” An influential figure in conservative media condemned it as “a disaster.” And Trump’s former top NATO envoy said it was “a big mistake” that would threaten the lives of Kurdish fighters who had fought for years alongside American troops against the Islamic State group.

Officials release IDs of 3 of the Chinatown homeless victims

NEW YORK (AP) — Eighty-three-year-old Chuen Kok, one of the four homeless victims bludgeoned to death with a metal rod as he slept on a Chinatown street, was remembered as a gentle” and “kind” man.

Other homeless men in the neighborhood who knew Kok told The Associated Press he was quiet, kind and well-known to people in the neighborhood.

Stephen Miller, 28, said he would try to give him a pork bun every day, or as often as he could.

Judge says New York prosecutors can see Trump’s tax returns

NEW YORK (AP) — With President Donald Trump under siege on Capitol Hill, a federal judge dealt him a setback on another front Monday and ruled that New York City prosecutors can see his tax returns for an investigation into matters including the payment of hush money to porn star Stormy Daniels and a Playboy centerfold.

Judge rejects Trump request to block New York subpoena for tax returns

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump cannot block a request to hand over eight years of tax returns to Manhattan prosecutors, a federal judge ruled, after Trump claimed he was immune from being sued.

Trump quickly filed an emergency notice of appeal to the federal appeals court in Manhattan.

U.S. District Judge Victor Marrero in Manhattan decided to abstain from resolving the dispute, and therefore dismissed Trump’s lawsuit.

Saudi Arabia, Iran work towards indirect talks: NYT

NEW YORK, Oct 06 (APP): Saudi Arabia and Iran have taken steps towards indirect talks to try to reduce the tensions that have brought the Middle East to the brink of war, with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman urging Pakistan and Iraq to speak with the Iranian leadership about de-escalation, according to the New York Times.

Citing officials from several countries involved in the efforts, the newspaper said
in a report that the crown prince asked the leaders of Pakistan and Iraq to intervene.

Suspect held in fatal bludgeoning of sleeping homeless men

NEW YORK (AP) — A homeless man wielding a long metal bar rampaged through New York City’s Chinatown early Saturday attacking other homeless people who were sleeping, killing four and leaving a fifth with serious injuries, police said.

Police recovered the weapon, which was still in the suspect’s hands when he was arrested, officials said.

“The motive appears to be, right now, just random attacks,” Chief of Manhattan South Detectives Michael Baldassano said, adding there was no evidence yet that the victims were “targeted by race, age, anything of that nature.”

GOP unlikely to reprise role it played in Nixon’s 1974 exit

NEW YORK (AP) — On Aug. 7, 1974, three top Republican leaders in Congress paid a solemn visit to President Richard Nixon at the White House, bearing the message that he faced near-certain impeachment due to eroding support in his own party on Capitol Hill. Nixon, who’d been entangled in the Watergate scandal for two years, announced his resignation the next day.

Pakistan never barred, nor forcibly ejected refugees: Ex-envoy Amil

UNITED NATIONS, Oct 05 (APP): Despite its immense challenges, Pakistan never closed its doors or forcibly removed refugees from it soil, a former Pakistani diplomat said during a panel discussion held at United Nations (UN) Headquarters in New York to raise awareness of the issues affecting refugees.

Farukh Amil, a former Ambassador to the United Nations offices in Geneva, said Pakistan has always maintained that refugees should return home voluntarily and in dignity and honour.
