Trump denounces Pelosi after she said she would like to see him in prison

NEW YORK, Jun 07 (APP): US President Donald Trump has called House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi a “nasty, vindictive, horrible person” after reports leaked that she told her fellow Democrats that she didn’t want to impeach the president, but rather “see him in prison.”

In an interview with Fox News in Normandy, France, on Thursday night amid D-Day commemorations, Trump responded to her remark, which was reported by POLITICO, a U.S. media group.

Senior executives leave Uber after internal shakeup

NEW YORK (AP) — Uber is parting ways with two of its top executives less than a month after the company’s rocky stock market debut.

CEO Dara Khosrowshahi told employees in an email Friday that he plans to be more involved in day-to-day operations now that the initial public offering of stock has passed. He said the heads of the company’s global rides and food-delivery teams will report directly to him, and Chief Operating Officer Barney Harford will leave the company.

NASA announced Friday that the orbiting outpost is now open for business to private citizens, with the first visit expected to be as early as next year.

There is a catch, though: You’ll need to raise your own cash, and it won’t be cheap.

A round-trip ticket likely will cost an estimated $58 million. And accommodations will run about $35,000 per night, for trips of up to 30 days long, said NASA’s chief financial officer Jeff DeWit.

2 first-timers among 5 nations elected to Security Council

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Estonia and the Caribbean island nation of St. Vincent and the Grenadines were elected to the U.N. Security Council on Friday, marking the first time the countries will hold seats on the U.N.’s most powerful body.

Niger, Tunisia and Vietnam also won two-year terms, and the five countries will take their new spots next year on the 15-member council.

UN chief calls for action on air pollution to save lives

UNITED NATIONS, Jun 06 (APP): UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, marking World Environment Day, has emphasized the link between worsening levels of air pollution and the climate crisis.

As well as claiming seven million lives every year, and damaging children’s development, the UN chief noted in a message on the occasion that many air pollutants cause global warming, which he has described as “an existential threat.”

Indian-origin woman gets 22 years in US for killing stepdaughter

New York, Jun 4 (PTI) An Indian-origin woman in the US has been sentenced to 22 years to life in prison for strangling her nine-year-old stepdaughter to death in a bathtub, a crime described as "unimaginable" by the court.

Shamdai Arjun, 55, of Queens, New York was convicted last month of second-degree murder by a jury that deliberated for less than one hour before Queens Supreme Court Justice Kenneth Holder. She was sentenced Monday to an indeterminate term of 22 years to life in prison.

UN expert calls air pollution violation of human rights

UNITED NATIONS, Jun 03 (APP): A UN expert said Monday that the failure of governments across the world to ensure clear air, constitutes a “violation of the rights to life, health and well-being, as well as the right to live in a healthy environment.”

Ahead of the 2019 World Environment Day on Wednesday, which has air pollution as its theme, David Boyd, the UN’s Special Rapporteur on human rights and the environment, called on states to take urgent action to improve air quality in order to fulfill their human rights obligations.

High healthcare costs put mothers and newborns at risk: UNICEF

UNITED NATIONS, Jun 03 (APP): Pregnant women are putting their lives and babies at risk because of “catastrophic” and prohibitive healthcare costs before, during and after childbirth, UNICEF said on Monday.

In a new report highlighting how few of the world’s poorest pregnant women have a doctor, nurse or midwife at their side when they need them most, the UN Children’s Fund said that more than 800 women die every day from complications, while many more mothers live with “debilitating” outcomes.

Trump ignites Twitter war with London Mayor Sadiq Khan just before landing in UK

NEW YORK, Jun 03 (APP): US President Donald Trump, who had mocked London Mayor Sadiq Khan’s height before boarding his presidential plane to start his controversial state visit to the United Kingdom, continued to disparage the Muslim politician, who of Pakistani ancestry, just before landing in London.

In his last statements before departing Washington for the British capital, Trump compared Sadiq Khan to New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, one of the strongest critics of the president, and said he was not looking forward to meet him during his stay in London.
