UN chief calls for ‘strong and united’ Europe to avoid new cold war

UNITED NATIONS, May 30 (APP): With the post-world war international institutions eroded and under threat, a “strong and united Europe” standing alongside the United Nations, has never been more essential, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in Germany on Thursday.

“If you want to avoid a new cold war… if you want to build a true multilateral order, we absolutely need a united and strong Europe,” Guterres, a former Portuguese prime minister, said as he accepted the Charlemagne Prize for services to European unity in Aachen, Germany.

WikiLeaks’ Julian Assange suffers from ‘psychological torture’

UNITED NATIONS, May 31 (APP): A UN expert, who visited WikiLeaks co-founder Julian Assange in a London prison, Friday warned against extraditing him to the United States where he fears the controversial publisher’s human rights would be seriously violated after having been subjected to “psychological torture” as a result of years of isolation and persecution.

President Trump admits Russia helped elect Him—then does a U-turn

NEW YORK, May 30 (APP): US President Donald Trump finally admitted in a tweet that Russia helped elected him before immediately retracting it.

In series of testy tweets , he said he “had nothing to do with Russia helping me to get elected.”

“No, Russia did not help me get elected,” Trump told reporters as he departed Washington for Colorado Springs. “I got me elected.” He spoke less than an hour after his Twitter post.

Uber’s Q1 losses reach $1B despite revenue growth

NEW YORK (AP) — Uber is continuing to bleed money even as it posts dramatic revenue growth.

In its first financial report since its lackluster debut on Wall Street, Uber said Thursday that its revenue rose to $3.1 billion in the first quarter of 2019, up 20% from the same time last year, beating expectations of analysts polled by FactSet. But the ride-hailing giant posted $1 billion in losses as it fights to maintain its share of the market.

Ethiopian pilot pleaded for training weeks before Max crash

NEW YORK (AP) — Just days after a Lion Air Boeing 737 Max nosedived in Indonesia and killed all 189 people aboard, an Ethiopian Airlines pilot began pleading with his bosses for more training on the Max, warning that crews could easily be overwhelmed in a crisis and that one of their planes could be the next to go down.

“We are asking for trouble,” veteran pilot Bernd Kai von Hoesslin wrote in a December email obtained by The Associated Press, adding that if several alarms go off in the cockpit at once, “it will be a crash for sure.”

"Can't this Council take any concrete action when attacks on schools and hospitals have become a war tactic that no longer sparks outrage?" UN Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator Ursula Mueller threw the hard-hitting question towards the Security Council, which was discussing the humanitarian situation in Syria.

Paul Whelan's family thanks Russia's Human Rights Council for help

NEW YORK, May 28. /TASS/: The relatives of Paul Whelan, who is detained in Russia on espionage charges, have expressed gratitude to the presidential Human Rights Council which will look into how he is treated at the pre-trial detention center of Moscow’s Lefortovo prison.

"We are grateful that President Putin's Human Rights Council will be looking into Paul's treatment at Lefortovo," Paul Whelan’s brother David said in a letter emailed to TASS on Tuesday.
