India: Well-known academician Anandakrishnan dies of Covid-19

Chennai, May 29 (PTI) Renowned academician and Padmashri recipient M Anandakrishnan died here on Saturday.

Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit, Chief Minister M K Stalin and many others condoled the death of the former Vice Chancellor of Anna University.

The deceased, in his early 90s, was reportedly under treatment for COVID-19.

Anandakrishnan had earlier served as chairman of the Board of Governors of IIT, Kanpur.

In his condolence message, Purohit expressed anguish over the demise of the educationist.

India: Four more Oxygen Express trains reach TN

Coimbatore, May 23 (PTI) Tamil Nadu on Sunday received four Oxygen Express trains from Odisha, carrying a total of 254.56 metric tonnes of the life saving gas.

The trains arrived in the state on Sunday afternoon, a Southern Railway release said.

Three Oxygen Express trains reached the Inland Container Depot in Chennai.

Another train from Rourkela chugged into Madukkarai near Coimbatore.

Till date, 1024.18 MT of oxygen has been delivered to the state, it said.

India: Temple for 'Corona Devi' (Corona goddess) comes up in TN

Coimbatore, May 21 (PTI) As the severe second wave of Covid-19 sweeps across the country, not sparing this district too, a Coronadevi temple has come up on the outskirts of the city, thanks to a mutt, seeking divine intervention to put an end to the raging pandemic.

This is in line with a 'Plague Mariamman Temple', dedicated by the faithful to the deity Amman seeking her protection earlier when plague wreaked havoc about 150 years ago.

The Kamatchipuri Adheenam has built a temple near Irugur on the outskirts and consecrated an idol, naming it as Goddess Corona Devi.

India: Experts will be consulted on whether or not to extend lockdown beyond May 24, says TN CM Stalin

Tiruchirappalli (TN), May 21 (PTI) A decision on whether to extend the two-week lockdown in Tamil Nadu or not do so would be deliberated with a committee of experts and a panel of all-party legislators, Chief Minister M K Stalin said here on Friday.

Whether the curbs should be continued further and in case of extension of restrictions, what relaxations could be offered would all be discussed with experts and MLAs from all parties on Saturday in Chennai, he told reporters.

India: Puducherry CM Rangasamy stable after COVID infection

Chennai, May 10 (PTI) Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy is maintaining normal oxygen saturation and he continued to be stable, a hospital treating him here for COVID-19 said on Monday.

Rangasamy is being monitored by an expert team of clinicians and he is "maintaining normal oxygen saturation and continues to be stable," a MGM Healthcare bulletin said.

The union territory chief minister thanked all his well-wishers for their best wishes and prayers for a speedy recovery, the hospital said.

India: Omkarananda Swamy passes away after recovering from Covid

Madurai (TN), May 10 (PTI) Omkarananda Mahaswamiji, who founded the Chidbhavananda ashram at Theni in Tamil Nadu, died after a brief illness at a private hospital here on Monday, ashram sources said.

"The pujyasri Omkarananda Mahaswamiji attained mahasamadhi at 5.40 pm in Madurai," a source at the ashram said.

AIADMK Coordinator O Panneerselvam and BJP state chief L Murugan condoled the seer's demise.

The peetadhipathi who was admitted with Covid-19 tested negative recently but had suffered a cardiac arrest two days ago.

India: Stalin seeks 500 MT oxygen allocation from Centre for TN

Chennai, May 8 (PTI) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Saturday requested the Centre to enhance the medical oxygen allocation to Tamil Nadu to 500 metric tonnes.

The chief minister, who had a telephonic conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, assured the PM that Tamil Nadu would stand by the Centre in the fight against Coronavirus.

The Prime Minister assured Stalin that he would consider his request immediately, an official release here said.

India: Stalin appointed TN Chief Minister

Chennai, May 5 (PTI) Governor Banwarilal Purohit appointed DMK president M K Stalin as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu after he submitted a letter on his election as legislature party leader, the Raj Bhavan said on Wednesday.

Stalin called on Purohit at the Raj Bhavan and "submitted a letter intimating of his election as the leader of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Legislature party."

India: Early trends indicate edge for DMK in TN Assembly polls

Chennai, May 2 (PTI) Early trends indicated an edge for the DMK with the ruling AIADMK following behind and key leaders of both the fronts were leading in their respective segments.

About an hour following commencement of counting of votes for the April 6 Assembly elections, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami was leading in his home segment of Edappadi in Salem district and leader of opposition and DMK president M K Stalin was ahead in Kolathur constituency here.
