India: Stones hurled at shops by BJP workers durng UP CM's procession

Coimbatore, Mar 31 (PTI): A group of BJP workers on motorcycles allegedly hurled stones at shops asking the owners to down shutters as a procession to welcome Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was being taken out here, police said on Wednesday.

Action would be taken against the culprits, the police said.

India: HC orders exhumation of doctor's body, covid-19 victim

Chennai, Mar 31 (PTI): After 11 months of his death, the Madras High Court on Wednesay ordered the exhumation of the body of Dr Simon Hercules, who had been treating Covid patients and fell victim to the virus in April last year.

The remains should be exhumed from the Velangadu burial ground and re-buried at the Kilpauk Cemetery, Justice Abdul Quddhose gave the direction while allowing a writ petition from Simon's wife Anandi.

India: New EVMs will be used in coming polls: EC informs HC

Chennai, Mar 30 (PTI): The Election Commission on Tuesday informed the Madras High Court that it would use only new Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), manufactured three to four years ago, for the April 6 Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu.

Following the submission, the court disposed of a petition from the DMK on the matter.

India: Protect postal ballots: HC to Election Commission

Chennai, Mar 26 (PTI): The Madras High Court on Friday directed the Election Commission to preserve the postal ballots of the elderly voters, the differently abled and and the COVID-19-affected in strong rooms with CCTV cameras.

This directive was given so that there is no room for any complaint at a later stage.

The First Bench of Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy gave the direction to this effect while disposing of two public interest writ petitions of the DMK.

India: DMK will continue to fight against CAA, says Stalin

Chennai, Mar 14 (PTI) DMK chief M K Stalin on Sunday said his party would continue to urge the union government to scrap the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act and confer citizeship on Sri Lankan Tamils living in refugee camps in India.

In an addendum to the party manifesto unveiled on Saturday, he said DMK had all along opposed the CAA and campaigned against it and he even ran a campaign in Tamil Nadu collecting one crore signatures pressing for scrapping the law.

India: AIADMK leaders holds seat-sharing talks with Amit Shah

Chennai, Feb 28 (PTI) The AIADMK top leadership held seat-sharing talks with Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday for the Tamil Nadu Assembly election.

Chief Minister K Palaniswsami, who is the AIADMK joint coordinator, and his deputy O Panneerselvam, who is the party's coordinator, called on Shah at a star hotel in Chennai late on Sunday.

India: Central govt should cut its tax on fuel: TN govt

Chennai, Feb 27 (PTI) The Centre should come forward to reduce its tax on petroleum products since the resources for State's own tax revenue is meagre, Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam told the Assembly on Saturday.

Panneerselvam, pointing to accusations by the main opposition DMK over the interim budget (2021-22), said a flawed view, holding the state government responsible for the petrol and diesel price rise, was being propagated.

"There is no iota of truth in such a view," he said replying to the general discussion on budget.

Spin bowling All-rounder Gowtham was bought for a record Rs 9.25 crore by the Chennai Super Kings. The 32-year-old is currently with the Indian team as a net bowler for the ongoing Test series against England.

India was always committed to ensuring that the Tamils there lived with equity, equality, justice, peace and dignity, he said here, after launching various government projects in railways and defence sectors.

India: TN govt announces Rs 12,110 crore farm loan waiver

Chennai, Feb 5 (PTI) A few months ahead of Assembly elections, the AIADMK government in Tamil Nadu on Friday announced waiver of Rs 12,110 crore crop loans availed by 16.43 lakh farmers from cooperative banks.

Making the announcement in the state assembly, Chief Minister K Palaniswami said the scheme would come into immediate effect and a Government Order shall be issued while the required financial allocation would be made in the interim budget.
