India's first manned ocean mission 'Samudrayan' launched

Chennai, Oct 29 (PTI) India's first manned ocean mission 'Samudrayan' was launched here on Friday by Union Minister Jitendra Singh and with this the nation joined an elite club of nations having such underwater vehicles for carrying out subsea activities.

The nation has made huge progress in science and technology and when an Indian goes up into space as part of the Gaganyaan programme, another would dive deep into the ocean, the Minister said.

India: TN CM Stalin hops on to city bus, takes passengers by surprise

Chennai, Oct 23 (PTI) Passengers of a city bus on Saturday were in for a pleasant surprise when Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin boarded the vehicle and briefly interacted with them.

The chief minister was on his way to a vaccination camp, held as part of the sixth mega Covid-19 inoculation drive across the state, at Kannagi Nagar here when he boarded the "M-19 b Kannagi Nagar-T Nagar" service, much to the delight of the passengers.

He mainly enquired with the women about the government's free bus travel scheme for them, an official said.

Chennai, Oct 15 (PTI): Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi and Chief Minister M K Stalin on Friday paid tributes to A P J Abdul Kalam, former President, on his 90th birth anniversary.

Paying floral tributes to a portrait of Kalam in the Raj Bhavan here, the Governor called upon the students and youth to rejuvenate their strategies by following Kalam's mantra of Dream your aim to make it true. He urged the younger generation to carry forward the former President's mission by inculcating noble thoughts, values, patriotism and the desire to aim high.

India: Man-eater tiger trapped in Nilgiris

Udhagamandalam (Tamil Nadu), Oct 15 (PTI): Finally, the elusive man-eating tiger has been trapped in Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu after being twice hit by tranquilizer darts in the last 14 hours, forest officials said on Friday.

The tiger had been a menace to villagers in Gudalur and Masinagudi after it killed four people, the most recent being a 85-year-old man, and also over 20 head of cattle and goats, said the officials who were trying to trap it since September 25.

India: TN firm bags Boeing contract to manufacture aviation components

Chennai, Sep 27 (PTI) A Tamil Nadu based manufacturing company has bagged a contract from global aerospace giant, Boeing, to supply critical aviation components and deliveries would begin early next year.

Officials of the two companies exchanged the contract in the presence of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin at the Secretariat here for manufacture and supply of components and parts for Boeing's products.

Chennai, Sep 27 (PTI) In solidarity with the nationwide strike demanding repeal of Centre's farm laws, farmer bodies and Left parties on Monday staged protests in several parts of Tamil Nadu.

In a protest held here, State Secretaries of the CPI and CPI(M), R Mutharasan and K Balakrishnan respectively, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi chief Thol Thirumavalavan and functionaries of the ruling DMK affiliated Labour Progressive Federation participated.

India: Caste based Census is necessary, PMK tells Centre

Chennai, Sep 26 (PTI) A nationwide, caste wise enumeration, as part of the Census is an unavoidable necessity and hence should be carried out by the central government, Pattali Makkal Katchi founder leader S Ramadoss said on Sunday.

Pointing to the union government's contention in the Supreme Court of a policy decision since 1951 against caste wise enumeration, the PMK leader said taking such a stand is not in sync with the present times. It is a fact that it has been the Centre's policy for decades, but this is "not correct," he said in a statement.

India: Tamil is the language of gods, says Madras HC

Chennai, Sep 13 (PTI) Hailing Tamil as the "Language of Gods," the Madras High Court has said temple consecrations across the country should be done reciting Tamil hymns composed by saints like Azhwars and Nayanmars, besides others like Arunagirinathar.

A bench of Justice N Kirubakaran, since retired, and Justice B Pugalendhi, in a recent order also said that in our country "it is made to believe that Sanskrit alone is Gods' language."

India: Stalin voices concern against privatisation of PSUs

Chennai, Sep 3 (PTI) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Friday urged the Centre to "reconsider" its decision to "privatise" Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), saying they play a key role in the country's industrialisation and self-reliance goals.

The chief minister's missive to Modi came a day after he informed the Tamil Nadu Assembly that he will write to the PM on the matter.

An official release, quoting from Stalin's communication, stated he told Modi that to establish such units, people's lands, besides those ofthe government, had also been allotted.
