India: Madras HC quashes detention order against Bangladeshi

Chennai, Aug 14 (PTI): The Madras High Court has come to the rescue of a Bangladeshi national from being deported to that country by quashing an order dated April 12, 2021.

The court was allowing a writ petition from Ruma Sarkar seeking to quash the order of the Secretary (FAC), Public (Foreigners) Department, detaining her husband Sushil Sarkar and confining him to a special camp for foreigners on the premises of the Central prison in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu.

Passing strictures against a lawyer for filing a PIL petition seeking to restrain Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin from presiding over the advisory panel of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) department, unless he takes a pledge before a Hindu God that he would profess the Hindu religion, the court dismissed the plea.

Indian fisherman hurt in firing by Lankan Navy

Nagapattinam(TN), Aug 2 (PTI): A fisherman belonging to Nagapattinam district sustained head injuries as Sri LankanNavyallegedly openedfirewhen he was fishing along with others off the Kodiakarai coast.

A total of 10 fishermen belonging to Akkaraipettai and Keechankuppamhamlets ventured into the sea in a mechanised boat from Nagapattinam port on July 28, Nagapattinam fisheries department officials said.

India: Haasan demands withdrawal of Draft Cinematograph Bill

Chennai, Jul 28 (PTI) Veteran actor Kamal Haasan on Wednesday said he had submitted before a Parliamentary panel in detail, the "dangerous aspects" of the Draft Cinematograph (Amendment) Bill, 2021, which "strangles the voice of freedom of expression."

The actor, also founder of Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) political party, had appeared before the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology chaired by senior Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP Shashi Tharoor on Tuesday.

India: Free vaccination at Tamil Nadu's pvt hospitals soon

Coimbatore, July 20 (PTI) The Tamil Nadu government is planning to launch a free vaccination drive through private hospitals in the state, for the benefit of public, by utilising CSR funds provided by private companies, state Health Minister M Subramanian said on Tuesday.

Talks were held in this connection with 117 private hospitals in Coimbatore, Tirupur, Erode and Salem and the scheme will be launched in this city initially and later expanded to other parts of the state, Subramanian told reporters here.

India: Sputnik V vaccination drive from July 12

Coimbatore, July 9 (PTI) The city-based AGs Health Care, an outpatient centre to be approved by the Tamil Nadu government as a COVID-19 vaccination centre, is launching a Sputnik V vaccination drive from July 12.

The centre would vaccinate frontline workers (doctors, health care workers, mediapersons and police personnel), senior citizens, transgenders, specially challenged individuals, and people with co-morbidities, said director of AGs Health Care Dr Adityan Guhan said in a release on Friday.

India: Allocate 90 % Covid vaccines to govt institutions: TN CM

Chennai, Jun 28 (PTI) The Tamil Nadu government on Monday urged the Centre to revise the 75:25 allocation format of Covid vaccines to government and private institutions and demanded that 90 per cent of the doses be given to the state-run facilities.

In a letter to Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Harsh Vardhan, Chief Minister M K Stalin said the "25 per cent allocation to private hospitals is grossly higher when compared to the actual vaccinations done by them."

India: Elephants at Mudumalai camp tested for Covid-19

Udhagamandalam (TN), Jun 8 (PTI) Swabs of 28 captive elephants at a camp in the district on Tuesday have been taken for testing, days after a lioness succumbed to COVID-19 and nine others in the pride tested positive for the infection at a Zoo in Chennai.

Forest minister K Ramachandran ordered samples to be collected from all the elephants and send them to the Indian Veterinary Research Institute at Izatnagar, Uttar Pradesh for testing, forest department sources said.

India: IIT Madras to collaborate with IBM on quantum computing

Chennai, May 31 (PTI) Indian Institute of Technology Madras on Monday announced its collaboration with IBM on quantum computing education and research.

The collaboration would provide IIT Madras faculty, researchers, and students access to IBMs quantum systems and tools over IBM Cloud, the IIT(M) said.
