India: Terrorist Vikas Dubey's killing raises handcuffing issue vis-a-vis SC guidelines on "inhuman" practice

New Delhi, Jul 10 (PTI) The alleged encounter killing of dreaded gangster Vikas Dubey on Friday has kicked up dust over his not being apparently handcuffed by the police, against the backdrop of the Supreme Court's disapproving the practice in various orders, calling it inhuman, unreasonable, over harsh and arbitrary.

The apex court has from time to time issued a slew of directives on the procedure to be followed while handcuffing an undertrial, maintaining that the insurance against escape does not compulsorily require handcuffing.

India's COVID-19 tally reaches 820,000 with 27,114 new cases, death toll climbs to 22,123

New Delhi, Jul 11 (PTI) With a record single-day increase of 27,114 cases, India's COVID-19 tally zoomed past the eight-lakh mark on Saturday, just four days after crossing the seven-lakh post, according to health ministry data.

This was the eighth consecutive day that COVID-19 cases in the country increased by more than 22,000.

According to data updated at 8 am, the death toll climbed to 22,123 with 519 people succumbing to the disease in 24 hours

India: Record single-day jump of 26,506 COVID-19 cases

New Delhi, July 10 (PTI) India saw yet another record single-day jump of 26,506 COVID-19 cases pushing its tally to 793,802 on Friday, while the death toll climbed to 21,604 with 475 people succumbing to the infection, according to the Union Health Ministry data.

The number of recoveries stands at 4,95,51, while there are 276,685 active cases of coronavirus infection presently in the country, the updated data at 8 am showed.

India: Hours before terrorist Vikas Dubey's encounter, plea in SC claims possibility of his killing by cops

New Delhi, Jul 10 (PTI) Hours before gangster Vikas Dubey was killed in an encounter near Kanpur on Friday, a petition was filed in the Supreme Court seeking a direction to the Uttar Pradesh government and the police to safeguard his life and ensure that he is not killed by the cops.

The plea has also sought registration of an FIR and an apex court monitored probe by the CBI into the encounter of five co-accused, who were alleged to be associated with Dubey in the killing of eight policemen last week.

India: Delhi court grants bail to 91 Tablighi foreigners from 21 countries

New Delhi, Jul 8 (PTI) A Delhi court Wednesday granted bail to 91 foreigners from 21 countries who were chargesheeted for attending Markaz at Nizamuddin here allegedly in violation of visa conditions, indulging in missionary activities illegally and violating government guidelines issued after the COVID-19 outbreak.

Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Gurmohina Kaur granted the relief to the foreigners on furnishing a personal bond of Rs 10,000 each.

India: SC asks SG Tushar Mehta to look into plea seeking action against illegal ashrams

New Delhi, Jul 8 (PTI) The Supreme Court Wednesday asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to look into a plea seeking action against illegal ashrams run by bogus Babas' across the country and rescuing women from jail-like conditions in Adhyatimik Vidyalaya' at Rohini here.

"Look into this, what can be done. This gives a bad name to everyone," the top court told Mehta.

India: Ganguly announces cancellation of Asia Cup in September

New Delhi, Jul 8 (PTI) BCCI president Sourav Ganguly on Wednesday announced cancellation of the Asia Cup T20, which was scheduled to be held in September.

Pakistan had the hosting rights of the six-team continental event but it was expected to be held in the UAE.

"Asia Cup cancel ho chuka hai, jo September me tha (Asia Cup, which was to be held in September, has been cancelled)," Ganguly told 'sports tak' in an instagram live session.

India: All inmates can now consult priv lawyers: prisons authority to HC

New Delhi, Jul 7 (PTI) The prisons authority told the Delhi High Court Tuesday that jail inmates in the national capital can now consult their private or legal aid lawyers via video conference.

The facility was earlier available only for consulting legal aid lawyers, but by a circular issued on Monday, July 6, all inmates in all the jails can now use it to even consult their private lawyers, the prisons authority informed a bench of Chief Justice D N Patel and Justice Prateek Jalan.
