Turkey's influence in Africa on the rise

21 Oct 2021; MEMO: With a four-day Africa tour by Turkey's president having come to a close on Wednesday, Ankara enjoys a striking presence on the continent as a result of 20 years of efforts to improve relations, Anadolu News Agency reports.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has paid official visits to 30 out of the 54 countries in Africa, with his latest tour on 17 – 20 October comprising  Angola, Togo and Nigeria.

Turkey likely to be placed on global financial watchdog's "grey list"

21 Oct 2021; MEMO: Turkey has been "grey listed" by a global financial watchdog over its alleged failure to fight money laundering and the financing of terror, in a major blow that could see Turkey lose billions in foreign investment.

According to the Financial Times newspaper, two anonymous Western officials revealed to it yesterday that the Paris-based Financial Action Task Force (FATF) was "very likely" to approve the decision to place Turkey on its grey list, following discussions today.

Turkey president asks parliament to extend military operations in Syria, Iraq

21 Oct 2021; MEMO: The Turkish presidency yesterday submitted a memorandum requesting parliament extend the authority granted to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to carry out military operations in Syria and Iraq for another two years, starting from 30 October, Anadolu Agency reported.

The agency said the memorandum explained that the risks and threats to national security caused by the developments and the ongoing conflict in areas adjacent to Turkey's southern borders, are constantly escalating.

German pharmaceutical giant plans to invest Turkey

18 Oct 2021; MEMO: The head of the German Turkish Chamber of Industry and Commerce said that German pharmaceutical giant plans to make investments in Turkey and establish a joint venture with the prominent Turkish pharmaceutical player, Anadolu News Agency reports.

According to the report, Markus Slevogt announced that German pharmaceutical giant, Boehringer Ingelheim, plans to make investments in Turkey and establish a joint venture with prominent Turkish pharmaceutical player, Abdi İbrahim.

Turkey to buy Russia fighter jets if US fails to deliver F-16s: Turkish defence head

18 Oct 2021; MEMO: The head of Turkey's Defence Industry, Ismail Demir, has said that Turkey is still keeping its options open to considering the purchase of Russian Su-35 fighter jets, in the case that the United States refuses an agreement to deliver F-16 fighter jets.

Turkey's Erdogan says U.S. proposed F-16 sales in return for its F-35 investment

ISTANBUL, Oct 17 (Reuters) - President Tayyip Erdogan said on Sunday that the United States had proposed the sale of F-16 fighter jets to Turkey in return for its investment in the F-35 programme, from which Ankara was removed after purchasing missile defence systems from Russia.

Reuters reported earlier this month that Turkey made a request to the United States to buy 40 Lockheed Martin-made F-16 fighter jets and nearly 80 modernization kits for its existing warplanes. 

German chancellor in Istanbul to meet Turkey president

16 Oct 2021; MEMO: German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Saturday arrived at the Huber Mansion in Istanbul to meet with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Anadolu Agency reports.

Merkel and Erdogan boarded a golf cart and visited the beach area of the mansion.

Standing next to the flags of Turkey and Germany, the two leaders greeted local and foreign journalists in the area.

Later, the two leaders left the area for the scheduled meeting.

UK may buy Turkish drones: Industry Minister

16 Oct 2021; MEMO: The United Kingdom may consider the purchase of Turkish drones, Turkey's minister of industry and technology revealed yesterday.

Speaking to CNN Turk, Mustafa Varank said that "the UK is very interested in Turkish armed drones. Now, they have to decide. We presented them with the options. Right now, they're seriously considering these options."
