'Hundreds of thousands of migrant children missing in Europe'

25 Sep 2021; MEMO: Hundreds of thousands of migrant and refugee children are missing in Europe, with no one knowing what happened to them, according to a member of the Turkish delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Anadolu Agency reports.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency on Friday, Serap Yasar said migration has been a hot topic around the world since 2011 and the recent situation in Afghanistan shows it will be on the agenda in the future as well.

'Syria regime poses threat to southern Turkey': Erdoğan

25 Sep 2021; MEMO: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan informed journalists on Friday that the Syrian regime of Bashar Al-Assad poses a threat to the south of Turkey, Daily Sabah reported.

Speaking about his upcoming visit to Sochi, the Russian resort city, Erdoğan stated that he will discuss the issue of Syria with Russian President Vladimir Putin: "I expect from Mr Putin, actually from Russia, different approaches as a necessity of our solidarity."

Refugees in fear as sentiment turns against them in Turkey

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Fatima Alzahra Shon thinks neighbors attacked her and her son in their Istanbul apartment building because she is Syrian.

The 32-year-old refugee from Aleppo was confronted on Sept. 1 by a Turkish woman who asked her what she was doing in “our” country. Shon replied, “Who are you to say that to me?” The situation quickly escalated.

Turkey to kick off talks with UAE on energy investment

22 Sep 2021; MEMO: Turkey is to start talks with the United Arab Emirates over funding its energy sector, the deputy power minister said yesterday.

According to Reuters, Alparslan Bayraktar told reporters that Turkey is in talks with the UAE on energy cooperation.

"There are such a lot of areas where we will cooperate," he said.

Turkey to present Paris climate pact for parliament vote

22 Sep 2021; MEMO: President Tayyip Erdogan said yesterday that the Paris climate agreement would be presented to the Turkish parliament for approval next month, which would make it the last G20 country to ratify the deal, Reuters reports.

Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly, Erdogan said Turkey had not ratified the deal due to injustices regarding responsibilities.

"Following the distance covered in this framework, I want to announce the decision we have taken to the world from here," he said.

Elephant tusk dating back 17M years found in southwestern Turkey

19 Sep 2021; AA: An elephant tusk dating back 17 million years has been found in southwestern Turkey, scientists announced on Saturday.

The prehistoric tusk was discovered in Buldan in the Denizli province, along with fossils from an estimated 38 different species, said the excavation team.

A group of paleoanthropologists, geologists and students carried out the surface survey under the coordination of the Culture and Tourism Ministry.

Emine Erdogan, who wrote about her impressions and memories of her travels to Africa, is flying with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to New York on Sunday to attend the UN General Assembly.

Turkey Tightens Control On Refugees, Halts Newcomers

ANKARA, Sept 14 (NNN-ANADOLU) – The Turkish government decided to put new plans in motion, which will tighten control on millions of refugees in the country, a move aiming to address rising negative feelings against migrants among the population.

Authorities will halt the issue of new applications for temporary protection papers, in the capital Ankara, and prevent unregistered Syrians from residing in the city.

Turkey starts normalisation process with Egypt

14 Sep 2021; MEMO: Turkey began normalisation talks with Egypt, Turkey's ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) spokesperson Omer Celik said in a press conference yesterday, the Anadolu Agency reports.

Celik stressed that there are important issues the two countries need to discuss and find solutions for, including developments in Libya, Syria, Iraq, Palestine, and the Eastern Mediterranean.

Turkish Soldier Killed In Northern Iraq

ANKARA, Sept 13 (NNN-ANADOLU) – One Turkish soldier was killed and another wounded, in an attack by the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in northern Iraq, Turkey’s defence ministry said yesterday.

The PKK attacked a Turkish military vehicle, outside Turkey’s base in the “Operation Pence-Simsek” zone, the ministry said in a statement.

The attack came, one day after three Turkish soldiers were killed and two others injured, in an attack in Idlib, north-western Syria.

Turkey regularly conducts cross-border operations on PKK bases in northern Iraq.
