20 August 2022; MEMO: The Arab League on Friday rejected the German "campaign of bullying" against Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas following his "50 Holocausts" remarks.

A statement issued by the Arab League asserted that it: "Expresses its rejection and surprise at what appeared to be a German campaign of bullying against Palestine and President Mahmoud Abbas."

17 August 2022; MEMO: A Cairo criminal court yesterday handed the death sentence to a judge who has been found guilty of killing his wife. The case has now been transferred to the Grand Mufti, standard procedure under Egyptian law for death sentences to be ratified.

Ayman Hajjaj was convicted of murdering his wife, Egyptian TV presenter Shaimaa Gamal, assisted by his friend, Hussein Al-Gharably.

18 August 2022; MEMO: Egyptian Transport Minister Kamel El-Wazir yesterday witnessed the signing of a preliminary agreement for the management and operation of the three lines of the high-speed electric train network.

The agreement was signed between the National Authority for Tunnels in Egypt, the Egyptian private-sector company Elsewedy Electric, and the German railway company Deutsche Bahn (DB).

17 August 2022; MEMO: Egyptian football star Mohamed Salah has donated three million Egyptian pounds ($157,000) to rebuild and restore the church in Giza that burnt down over the weekend in a deadly fire.

During Sunday mass a fire blazed through Abu Sifin Coptic Church killing 41 people including 18 children and wounding 45.

As the flames and smoke blocked the only entrance into and out of the church, many worshippers and kids died during the stampede to get out.

17 August 2022; MEMO: Egypt's external debt rose to $157.8 billion in March, from $145.5 billion last December, an increase of about $12.3 billion in three months, while total deposits with the Central Bank amounted to $14.9 billion.

Egypt's fiscal year runs from 1 July to 30 June.

A statement issued by the Central Bank said Egypt paid about $16.6 billion in premiums and $3.4 billion in interest during the first nine months of the last fiscal year.

CAIRO (AP) — A fire ripped through a packed church during morning services in Egypt’s capital on Sunday, killing at least 41 worshippers and injuring 14.

The church quickly filled with thick black smoke, and witnesses said several trapped congregants jumped from upper floors to escape. “Suffocation, suffocation, all of them dead,” said a distraught witness, who only gave a partial name, Abu Bishoy.

14 August 2022; MEMO: At least 35 people were killed and 45 injured in a fire inside a church in the Egyptian city of Giza on Sunday, two security sources told Reuters.

An electrical fire broke out as 5,000 worshippers gathered for Mass at the Coptic Abu Sifin church in the Imbaba neighbourhood, the sources said.

The fire blocked an entrance to the church, causing a stampede, they said, adding that most of those killed were children, Reuters reports.

CAIRO (AP) — Libyan authorities said Saturday they found at least 15 migrants dead in the desert on the borders with Sudan, the latest tragedy involving migrants seeking a better life in Europe via perilous journeys through the conflict-wrecked nation.

The Department for Combating Irregular Migration in the southeastern city of Kufra said the migrants were on their way from Sudan to Libya when their vehicle broke down due to lack of fuel.

CAIRO (AP) — President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi of Egypt announced a Cabinet reshuffle Saturday to improve his administration’s performance as it faces towering economic challenges stemming largely from Russia’s war in Ukraine.

The Cabinet shake-up, which was approved by parliament in an emergency session, affected 13 portfolios, including health, education, culture, local development and irrigation ministries.

CAIRO, Aug 11 (NNN-SPA) – A subsidiary of the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF), acquired minority stakes in four Egyptian companies for 1.3 billion U.S. dollars, Egypt’s Ministry of Planning and Economic Development, said yesterday.

This comes as Egypt ramps up its effort to entice foreign investors, the ministry said, in a statement.
