India: Covid-hit family starves at home, hospitalised

Aligarh (UP), Jun 16 (PTI) A Covid widow who lost her job due to the pandemic and her five children have been admitted to a hospital here, apparently after going without food for days.

Doctors at the Malkhan Singh District Hospital said the six family members were barely able to talk or stand up when they were admitted on Tuesday by some Good Samaritans.

India: Newborn girl found in wooden box floating in Ganga

Ghazipur (UP), Jun 16 (PTI) A newborn girl, wrapped in a piece of cloth and a chit declaring her as the "daughter of the Ganga", was found in a wooden box floating in the river at Dadrihhat here.

Contained a picture of goddess Durga, a horoscope and incense sticks, the box carrying the infant was found by a local boatman, Gullu Chaudhary, who carried the girl home.

Police said Gullu was at the Dadrighat on Tuesday evening when he heard cries of the baby and found her alive in the box.

India: Taj Mahal reopens after two months, tourists delighted

Agra, Jun 16 (PTI) A 40-year-old woman from Brazil was one of the early tourists to step inside the premises of Taj Mahal as it opened on Wednesday after having been closed for around two months amid the Covid-induced lockdown.

As many as 1,919 tourists, including two foreign nationals, visited the monument on the first day, officials said, adding 221 people visited Agra Fort, 75 Fatehpur Sikri and 151 Akbar's Tomb in Sikandra.

India: Easing stop timing fails to end jam on Taatmill crossing in Kanpur

Kanpur: Advanced Traffic control system remains ineffective in maintaining the even flow of motorised vehicles on the road.

Despite automatic signals and installation of other gadgets required to regulate the heavy traffic from morning to evening, these have stimulated headache to the public as well as the traffic officials.

Undoubtedly the road users do not avail the facility of fast movement on the road. Just take an example of Taatmill crossing here.

The automatic electronic traffic signal does not provide relief from the usual jam on the crossing. 

India: Ram temple trust members should resign: Akhilesh

Lucknow, Jun 15 (PTI) Amid allegations that the Ram Temple trust in Ayodhya paid an inflated price for a plot of land, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday sought the resignation of members of the body and a fair probe into the issue.

The opposition parties have alleged that the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust purchased a 12,000-square metre plot for over Rs 18 crore from people who purchased it for just Rs 2 crore -- just minutes before.

India: HC refuses to give custody of minor husband to major wife

Allahabad, Jun 15 (PTI) The Allahabad High Court has refused to give the custody of the minor husband to his wife holding that the marriage was voidable and allowing so would amount to sanctioning cohabitation between a major and a minor.

But as the boy/husband, who is 16 years of age, was not willing to live with his mother, the court also did not give his custody to her either.

India: Suspended BSP MLAs meet Akhilesh, may join SP

Lucknow, Jun 15 (PTI) About five MLAs suspended from the BSP in recent months met Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday, triggering speculation that they may join his party.

"The meeting with SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, which lasted for 15-20 minutes, witnessed discussions on the upcoming UP Assembly elections, and it was a nice meeting," Sushma Patel, MLA from Mungra Badshahpur assembly constituency in Jaunpur district told PTI.

India: Vaccination team lacked cotton at RTO camp

Kanpur: What more can be said if one person has to feel painful discomfort after vaccination at a camp held at RTO here on Monday. 

The vaccination needle pierced on the fleshy spot in the upper part of the hand caused the discharge of blood as cotton was not put on the hole.

The compounder who injected the jab did not put cotton to stop blood discharge. That was so because the team did not possess cotton. What was put was a piece of paper on the vaccinated point.
