Human rights NGO slams Trump plan: ‘Control over movement means control over life’

30 Jan 2020; MEMO: Israeli human rights organisation Gisha described the newly-published US “peace plan” as “a plan for ongoing conflict”, in a press release issued yesterday.

According to Gisha, which has a particular focus on freedom of movement for Palestinians living under occupation, the Trump administration’s plan “aims to make permanent a reality of fragmentation, isolation and division in the occupied Palestinian territory”.

India: Three Dalit leaders arrested in UP for apprehension of breach of peace

Muzaffarnagar, Jan 30 (PTI) Three Dalit leaders have been arrested here and sent to jail for alleged apprehension of breach of peace, police said.

Vikas Median, chief of Dalit outfit Udham Singh Sena, Bhim Army activist Teekam Bodh and one more person were arrested Wednesday evening over apprehensions that they could breach peace in the area, they said.

Meanwhile, the Bharat band called on Wednesday passed peacefully here and some organisations wrote memoranda against the Citizenship Amendment Act Wednesday evening.

India: Thousands take part in anti-CAA protest at Jantar Mantar

New Delhi, Jan 29 (PTI) Thousands of people from northern states, including many who have been part of a sit-in at Shaheen Bagh, and student groups on Wednesday held a protest at Jantar Mantar here against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

"We want the government to roll back the alliance of CAA, NRC and NPR," said Nadeem Khan, an activist of NGO 'United Against Hate'.

India: 'Fake' encounter: Allahabad HC seeks probe status

Allahabad, Jan 29 (PTI) The Allahabad High Court on Thursday directed the state government to file an affidavit and apprising it of the status of investigation in an alleged fake encounter case.

The Bench comprising Justice Pankaj Mithal and Justice S S Shamshery passed the order on a petition filed by Shivangi Yadav, the widow of Pushpendra Yadav, who was allegedly killed in a fake encounter on the intervening night of October 5 and 6 last year.

RAMALLAH/GAZA, Jan 30 (NNN-WAFA) – For the second day in a row, Palestinians in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, joined mass protests against the U.S. Middle East peace plan, also known as the Deal of the Century.

Officials and eyewitnesses said, clashes broke out between hundreds of Palestinian demonstrators and Israeli soldiers, in several West Bank towns, mainly in the areas of the Jordan Valley.

UN raises ‘serious concern’ over unfair trials of Daesh members in Iraq

29 Jan 2019; MEMO: The United Nations has raised “serious concern” over what it called “unfair trials” of former members of Daesh by the Iraqi judiciary.

A spokesman for the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) , Jeremy Laurence, told reporters in Geneva that a joint report was prepared by the United Nations Human Rights Office in Iraq (UNAMI) and OHCHR which covered 794 trials held between 1 May 2018 and 31 October 2019.

US deal ‘shameful and disingenuous’: Ilhan

After the deal was announced in Washington in the presence of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with no Palestinians present, progressive politicians and anti-occupation groups condemned the so-called “peace deal”.
