UNESCO calls on Israel to stop violations in Jerusalem

18 Oct 2019; MEMO: UNESCO’s Executive Board approved at its 207th session a resolution calling on Israel to stop its violations and unilateral actions against historic sites in Jerusalem.

The decision was made by the international organisation during its meeting in Paris.

The resolution called on Israel to stop its unilateral and illegal violations against Al-Aqsa Mosque and within the wall of the Old City of Jerusalem.

India: girl molested in UP on way home from college

Muzaffarnagar, Oct 18 (PTI) A 16-year-old girl was allegedly molested by two men when she was on her way home from an intermediate college here, police said on Friday.

The incident took place on Barla-Baseda road on Thursday, they said.

The two men accosted the girl and tried to forcibly take her to nearby sugarcane fields. They fled the spot after she raised an alarm, police said.

The girl's family lodged a police complaint against the accused, they said.

Egypt arrests a mother who enquired after her detained son

17 Oct 2019; MEMO: After a lawyer, his wife and his brother were arrested from a café in Damanhour, a city in Lower Egypt, his mother and two sisters were also arrested after enquiring about his whereabouts.

According to a Facebook post written by Major General Helmi Hamdoun, which has now been removed, his son and lawyer Mohamed Helmi Hamdoun was with his wife Asmaa Daabes and brother Ahmed in a café in Damanhour when security forces stormed the café and arrested all three of them.

Israel arrests Al-Aqsa Mosque preacher

17 Oct 2019; MEMO: Israeli occupation forces yesterday arrested Sheikh Ismail Nawahda, a preacher at Al-Aqsa Mosque, at the Qalandia checkpoint in the occupied West Bank, Wafa news agency reported.

Another 22 Palestinians were also detained yesterday from across the occupied West Bank, the news agency added.

Sheikh Nawahda was taken in for investigation at one of the Israeli police stations in West Jerusalem.

Kashmir: Sister and daughter of Farooq Abdullah released

Srinagar, Oct 16 (PTI) Women protestors, including National Conference President Farooq Abdullah's sister and daughter, who were arrested on Tuesday after they took out a protest march, were released on bail by a court here this evening, officials said.

Abdullah's sister Suraiya, his daughter Safiya and 11 other women furnished a personal bond of Rs 10,000 and surety of Rs 40,000 each under section 107 of criminal procedure code, giving an assurance that they would maintain peace, the officials said.

India: Goa school teacher arrested for molesting five students

Panaji, Oct 17 (PTI) A teacher of a government-run school in Goa was arrested on Thursday for allegedly molesting five girl students, police said.

The arrest was made after the five students of the school, located in Ponda town of South Goa district, complained to the authorities against the teacher, Manoj Phadte, Superintendent of Police Arvind Gawas told reporters.

India slips to 102 on Global Hunger Index of 117 countries

14 Oct 2019; (UMM): India has slipped to 102 in the Global Hunger Index (GHI) in 2019, from 93rd rank in 2015, the website that tracks hunger and malnutrition said on Wednesday. Pakistan, on the other hand, has improved its ranking from 106 in 2015 to 94 in 2019, while Sri Lanka has gone up from 82 to 66.

Countries like Yemen and Djibouti, which are conflict ridden and facing severe climate issues respectively, fared better than India.
