Palestine: leading Christian calls on all Palestinians to defend Al-Aqsa Mosque

23 May 2022; MEMO: A member of the Islamic-Christian Committee in Support of Jerusalem and its Sanctuaries has called for civil disobedience in occupied Jerusalem next Sunday to protect Al-Aqsa Mosque from the planned incursion by illegal Jewish settlers. 23 May 2022; MEMO: A senior Israeli lawmaker said, on Monday, the country risked a "religious war" after a court ruled in favour of Jews who had tried to pray at Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa Mosque compound as nationalists planned a march near the Muslim holy site, Reuters reports.

Palestinian factions have denounced Israeli moves in Jerusalem's Old City including the Jerusalem Magistrates' Court's decision yesterday to rescind a restraining order against three Jews who had prayed while visiting the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.

US diplomat meets Israeli extremists

23 May 2022; MEMO: A diplomat from the US consulate in Jerusalem met the leader of an extremist Jewish organisation on Sunday following its removal from America's list of foreign terrorist organisations. The radical Orthodox Jewish group Kahane Chai (Kach) was founded by ultranationalist Israeli Rabbi Meir Kahane in 1971. Its members have in the past killed Palestinians as well as Israeli officials.

India: Professor arrested for emails criticizing BJP gov in Assam

Hailakandi (Assam), May 21 (PTI) An associate professor of a college in Assam's Hailakandi district was arrested Saturday for allegedly sending emails to officials criticising government policies and using unparliamentary words against the state chief minister, a police officer said.

Police had registered a suo moto case against the professor, leading to his arrest, he added.

Indian Pegasus row: SC extends time for submitting probe report on use of Israeli spyware

New Delhi, May 20 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Friday extended the time for submitting the report by the apex court-appointed technical and supervisory committees to look into the Pegasus row, saying 29 infected mobile phones are being examined for the spyware and the process should be over in four weeks.

A bench headed by Chief Justice N V Ramana said the technical committee has been examining mobiles for the spyware and has also recorded statements of persons including some journalists.

US must not harm civilians, repeat past human rights violations in new Somalia mission: Rights group

20 May 2022; MEMO: As the US moves to redeploy hundreds of troops to Somalia, it makes efforts to minimise civilian harm, ensure justice for abuses and focus on civilian protection as a priority, Human Rights Watch (HRW) said on Friday, and Anadolu News Agency reports.

"Previous US military operations in Somalia resulted in the loss of life and property to Somali civilians that the US neither recognised nor provided with redress," the rights group said in a report.

Israel orders Palestinian families to stop building homes

20 May 2022; MEMO: The Israeli occupation authorities yesterday issued stop work orders for the homes being built by a group of Palestinians in the Artas villages in southern Bethlehem district, Wafa has reported.

According to the director of the Bethlehem office of the Wall and Settlements Resistance Commission, Hassan Breijeh, armed officers handed six families notices ordering them to halt construction work on their houses, which are still in the initial building stage.
