India: Farmercommits suicide in UP, upset over stray cattle damaging his crop

Banda (UP), Feb 9 (PTI) A 55-year-old farmer allegedly hanged himself from a tree in Jaspura village in Uttar Pradesh's Banda district, police said on Tuesday.

According to his family members, the farmer took the extreme step as he was upset over stray cattle damaging his crop.

The farmer, Subhash Singh, was found hanging on Tuesday morning, Station House Officer (SHO) Pankaj Kumar Singh said.

The farmer's son told police his father had gone to the field on Monday night but did not return.

Aligarh (UP), Feb 9 (PTI) RLD leader Jayant Chaudhary took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi getting emotional in the Parliament on Tuesday, saying had he shed some tears on the deaths of farmers during their protest, the situation would not have come to such a pass.

Addressing a farmer 'mahapanchayat' (large congregation) near Iglas in Uttar Pradesh's Aligarh district, Chaudhary said the farmers' protest had now turned into a people's movement that was gathering momentum with each passing day, adding that there was no turning back.

India: UP cop beaten to death, SI seriously injured

Kasganj (UP), Feb 9 (PTI) A constable was beaten to death and a sub-inspector seriously injured when a police team went to a village in Uttar Pradesh's Kasganj district to serve a warrant to a liquor mafia kingpin on Tuesday evening, officials said.

The two had gone to Nagla Dheemar village in Sidhpura police station area to serve a warrant to Moti when his associates caught them, District Magistrate Chandraprakash Singh said.

India: 10-yr-old girl found dead in UP's Banda, rape suspectd

Banda (UP), Feb 8 (PTI) A 10-year-old girl was found dead here with her family suspecting rape, police said on Monday.

Police said it seems the girl was strangled and the body was found from a field on Sunday night.

Area SHO Bhaskar Mishra said the girl had gone to the fields to get some fodder for cattle when the incident took place.

As she did not return till late in the night, her family members started searching for her, and found her body in the fields. Prima facie, it seems she was strangled."

India: Accomplice of pro-Khalistani arrested in UP

Lucknow, Feb 9 (PTI) A joint team of Punjab and UP police has arrested an accomplice of pro-Khalistan terrorists here, police said on Tuesday.

Jagdev Singh alias Jagga was arrested from Vikas Nagar area of the city on Monday, they said.

The accused is linked to pro-Khalistan terrorists Paramjit Singh Pammah and Maltani Singh, they said, adding, Paramjit is currently in the UK while Malatani is in Germany.

India: Minor girl raped in Uttar Pradesh

Shahjahanpur (UP), Feb 8 (PTI) A 15-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a youth of her village when she had gone to answer nature's call, police said on Monday.

Circle Officer of Puwaya, Mahendra Pal, on Monday said that the girl, a resident of a village under the Nigohi police station, on February 4 had gone to relieve herself when the youth of the same village grabbed her, took her to a secluded place and allegedly raped her.

India: BSP leader kills himself at tehsil office in UP

Budaun (UP), Feb 7 (PTI) A 40-year-old Bahujan Samaj Party leader killed himself by consuming a poisonous substance at a tehsil office in Uttar Pradesh's Badaun district after he was allegedly harassed by the SDM and a revenue official over a land allotment issue, police said on Sunday.

Harveer Singh (40) had consumed celphos tablets on Saturday at the Sahaswan tehsil office. He died at a hospital, they said.
